Why? Because blogging is considered one of the easiest side-hustles to get started with in terms of startup costs. Think of a brick and mortar store, how much does it cost to start one? According to “Entrepreneur”, the cost varies between $2,000 and up to $50,000 depending on the type of store. In contrast, blogging costs very little to get started at most maybe $150 per year.
The Beginners Guide to Side Hustle Ideas Like Blogging
So, why are side-hustles important? They are important because they allow you to show off your creativity in various ways. Think of all the different ways you showcase your creativity every day, whether it’s through home decorating, painting, or even a hobby like crochet.
You have your style of doing things, so why should your side hustle be any different. Don’t be afraid to showcase your talents and make a little bit of money doing it. For example, my 15-year-old daughter is talented when it comes to Minecraft and she just started a Fiverr gig to create custom buildings for people. How cool is that?!
What are Side Hustle Ideas Like Blogging?
There are numerous side hustles you can do to earn an extra income. These include; starting a craft business, offering classes or tutoring in your [skill/niche], offering services related to your [skill/niche], and the list goes on and on.
Ask yourself these questions before you start your side hustle; “What am I good at?” Are you good at something that others maybe want to learn about like painting or crochet? Can I help others learn [skill/niche]?” Can you help others learn how to paint with acrylic paints or crochet a blanket?
Example: For example, you can maybe start a blog about your favorite hobbies like crochet or painting. You can maybe even start a blog about teaching others to blog. Although, I would want until you’re familiar with blogging first. After all, you wouldn’t want someone teaching you how to blog if they didn’t know what they’re doing. The possibilities are endless when it comes to blogging.
How to get started with Blogging
So, what do you need to get started with blogging? All you need to get started with blogging is a domain name. A domain name is like your very own apartment on the internet. You will also need a web hosting service, you can think of a web hosting service as a place to store all of your furniture in your apartment. But, don’t let that little list fool you, a lot goes into creating and promoting a blog. There are also a few skills you will need to develop like doing keyword research, creating images for your blog, and writing your blog post.
First, let’s start with keyword research, think of a keyword that you want to target. For example, let’s use home decor ideas. When you type in home decor ideas into Google you should see About 697,000,000 results. I use the extension called Keywords Everywhere for Google Chrome or Firefox, for keyword research. This allows me to type in any keyword into the google search bar and it will give me the volume of it as well as related search results with their search volumes.
Getting Started with Blogging
Quick Note: As of October 1, 2019, the extension Keywords Everywhere will be a paid tool costing as little as $1 for 10,000 keywords data. Their plans are limited to pay as you go, so no monthly reoccurring charges. Most users should expect to pay less than $2 per month.
Look for keywords with a volume of between 1,500 and as low as 200 per month. The higher the search volume the harder it will be to rank in one of the top 10 search results. So, look for long-tail keywords with a search volume of about 500 to 1,000 per month that you can rank for in the top 10 results. Choose anywhere from 5 to 10 keywords to create content around, the more the better.

Common Questions/FAQ About Blogging
Where can I find topics to blog about?
Google is your friend, think about what your blog is about. Put yourself in the mind of your reader. What do you want your readers to know about a specific topic? Then, try to answer any questions that they may have regarding that topic. For example, let’s say your blog is maybe about home decor ideas, You could create topics on the different types of home decor like modern home decor or DIY home decor.
What types of keywords should I try to rank for?
Search for keywords related to your blog topics that have less than 2,000 searches per month. If you try to rank for keywords with higher search volumes it becomes increasingly difficult to get on page 1 of the search results. For example, try to rank for the keyword DIY home decor ideas under $100, if your blog is about home decor. Don’t try to rank for the keyword home decor ideas it’s too competitive.
Can I use Blogger as a platform to get started blogging for free?
The short answer is yes, but, you won’t have as much control over your blog as you would if you had a self-hosted blog. If you use the Blogger platform your domain would be yourniche.blogspot.com which isn’t good from an SEO standpoint. For this reason, Blogger blogs usually don’t rank high in search engine results.
Should I spend money on blogging courses?
My advice is to try to find information on your own first. There’s tons of information about blogging available on the internet. Buying a blogging course can help but the problem is people fall victim to what’s called shiny object syndrome. Once you buy 1 course you can end up getting distracted by the other hundreds of courses out there. Thus, you lose sight of your original objective of creating a blog.
